POSITION CLASS DEFINITION:
Essential nature of work, degree of difficulty and responsibility.
This position involves responsibility for assisting in the overall supervision of a large school district transportation system and coordinates compliance with Department of Motor Vehicle special requirements for School Bus Drivers. Individual assists in the supervision of a safe and efficient operation, and ensures that School Bus Drivers are hired, supervised, trained, and periodically examined in accordance with the law.
Employee works under administrative direction of the Transportation Supervisor with leeway allowed for exercise of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work. The Assistant Transportation Supervisor exercises supervision over the work of assigned employees. The incumbent does related work as required.
PRIMARY WORK ACTIVITIES
Typical activities characteristic of the class.
-- Assists the Transportation Supervisor in the development of bus routes and recommends changes, if necessary;
-- Assists in the management of the district transportation system;
-- Arranges or conducts periodic training and safety classes to reaffirm safe driving practices and resolve potential problems;
-- May make regular road trips to observe and evaluate driver's defensive driving performance in accordance with applicable Vehicle and Traffic Law regulations;
-- Handles complaints from drivers, parents, students and others in relation to bus routes, student discipline and other related matters as delegated by the Transportation Supervisor;
-- Assigns or supervises the training of substitute drivers and recommends appointment of bus drivers;
-- Assists in approval of all purchases of parts and materials;
-- Maintains or assists in maintaining time records of Bus Drivers for payroll purposes;
-- Investigates bus accidents on the scene and prepares reports;
-- Keeps administrators and drivers notified of changes in motor vehicle laws and regulations of concern to the district;
-- May conduct biennial behind-the-wheel driving tests for each driver in accordance with Vehicle and Traffic Law regulations;
-- May conduct individual driver qualification biennial oral or written exams in accordance with Vehicle and Traffic Law requirements and maintains appropriate records;
-- Submits a variety of records and reports to the Department of Motor Vehicles regarding driver education, training and competence;
-- Acts for the Transportation Supervisor, in his absence;
-- Prepares a variety of records and reports related to the work as delegated or required;
-- May receive calls for absences for runs and arrange for substitute drivers and aides;

-- Maintains an appropriate environment for handicapped students during transportation including maintaining inventory of first aide equipment such as suction tubes, etc.
-- Interprets and applies all internal policies and procedures pertaining to work environment including labor contracts and company policies regarding job assignments, overtime, etc.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF: safe transportation methods and the operation of school buses; the Vehicle and Traffic Law relating to school bus operation; the geography of the district;
ABILITY TO: organize and conduct driver training and safety courses for School Bus Drivers; keep records and make reports; operate a school bus; plan, coordinate, and oversee driver safety requirements on a large scale; get along well with others.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, specialized background, training and experience.
FOR THE CENTRAL SQUARE CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT:
Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and two years of experience in the operation and/or maintenance of school transportation vehicles.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Must be eligible for appropriate level driver's license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles at time of application. Must possess license at time of appointment.
NOTE: Since the position involves the operation of school buses, candidates must satisfy the requirements for School Bus Driver as set forth in the Rules and Regulations of the New York State Commissioner of Education, State Education Law, and Vehicle and Traffic Law.

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and two years of experience in the operation of a school transportation department.
