POSITION CLASS DEFINITION:
Essential nature of work, degree of difficulty and responsibility.
This position involves responsibility for coordinating and participating in the preparation, cooking, and serving of food, and in the cleaning of kitchen equipment.
This is routine work performed in connection with the preparation and cooking of food, and coordination of kitchen staff, on a moderately large scale. Employee acts as lead worker in directing the tasks of Food Service Helpers assigned to the food service area. The work is performed under the general supervision of the School Lunch Manager. The incumbent does related work as required.
PRIMARY WORK ACTIVITIES:
Typical activities characteristic of the class.
Supervises and participates in the following tasks:
-- Fills various condiment containers;
-- Assists in the preparation of salads and desserts;
-- Helps cooks in any phase of their duties;
-- Cleans, washes, and prepares fruits and vegetables for cooking or serving;
-- Coordinates the storage and care of food and supplies;
-- Cleans dining rooms and dish and linen closets;
-- Washes dishes, pots, and pans by hand or machine;
-- Sweeps, mops, and cleans kitchen area;
-- Polishes silverware;
-- Cleans tables and chairs;
-- Maintains records on food and supplies received and used;
-- May assist in maintaining employee time records;
-- May act as cashier;
-- May assist School Lunch Manager in planning menus;
-- May assist in ordering food and supplies.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF: the proper methods of serving food and of the care of related equipment, and appliances; principles and practices of large quantity food preparation, storage, and ordering of foods and supplies; operation of modern cooling utensils, appliances, and equipment;
ABILITY TO: understand and carry out oral and written directions; plan and coordinate the work of others; maintains records and prepares reports.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, specialized background, training and experience.
A. One year of experience assisting in food handling, preparation and/or cooking; OR
B. Completion of a training course in food preparation or service; OR
C. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of "A" and "B" above.
